There are several reasons why people have dry skin. For some, it is a genetic thing while it is an aesthetic issue for some others. Genetic dry skin is perfectly normal, what is not normal is worsening the dry skin situation by going after certain triggers. These triggers are what we discuss here today.
It is quite easy to opt for a hot water bath everyday seeing as the weather may be cold especially in Africa. However hot water is as calming to the skin as it is burning. Frequent use of hot water strips the skin of its oil and causes it to dry up. The skin needs the oils to stay moisturised and protected against excessive loss of water. This is because the oils help the skin trap moisture.
Therefore instead of going for hot water, it is advisable that one goes for warm water baths.
Poor skincare routine
The recommended skincare routine for the face is the cleanse-tone-moisturise one. These are important steps in skincare. The ingredients in your face wash, toner and moisturiser play a big role in determining the outcome of your skin. Using a moisturiser, especially a water-based one, is extremely important as it helps the skin stay hydrated. These steps should as much as possible, not be missed.
The skin naturally loses moisture and feels very dry when the season is dry. To combat this, one is required to generously apply moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated.
Cleansing the skin too often daily strips the skin of its oil content thus making it dry. It is important to choose cleanser and toner that are pH balanced. It is also important to avoid cleansing the skin too many times.
Alcohol can be found in a wide range of cosmetic products because it has many advantages. However, like hot water, alcohol also has a drying effect on the skin. It is therefore important to steer clear of products that contain alcohol as main ingredient, whether as cosmetic or in diets, especially if one has dry skin.
The skin gets drier as one ages. As we get older, there is a slow down of the skin oil production which increases the risk of getting dry skin. To remedy this, a good moisturiser should be used on the skin generously especially a moisturiser that contains glycerin and/or hyaluronic acid.
Fruits, vegetables and water are great additions to dieting. Drinking enough water daily as well as having healthy diet contributes to the moisturising properties of the skin.
Sometimes the cause of dry skin could just be a genetic condition or a medical history. One is more prone to dry skin conditions such as contact dermatitis if there is a history of this condition in the family.
In all, understanding the causes of dry skin is a great start to avoiding them and keeping the skin as healthy as possible.
